Simulation-based curriculum development: lessons learnt in Global Health education

Abstract Background Simulation based medical education (SBME) allows learners to acquire clinical skills without exposing patients unnecessary risk. This is especially applicable Emergency Medicine training programs where residents are expected demonstrate proficiency in the management of time critical, low frequency, and highly-morbidity conditions. study aims describe process through which a SBME curriculum was created, limited simulation resource setting at 4-year (EM) residency program American University Beirut Medical Center. Methods A case-based pilot developed following Kern’s 6 step approach design. The curricular objectives were identified an anonymous survey program’s faculty. Curriculum outcomes assessed, revised address barriers. Evaluations collected during sessions whole evaluation end first year its implementation. Results 14/20 (70%) 8/8 faculty (100%) completed needs assessment from for implemented 2-h over 1-year period. Objectives not met barriers included cost, scheduling, resources, time. addressed these 24 40-min successfully conducted year. took place 3 time, slots, using same scenario meet different learners’ levels. 91/91 evaluations participants with overall positive results. main differences between curricula included: better understanding center resources faculty’s capabilities. Conclusion Simulation-based feasible even limited-resources. However, available, advocating protected educator essential implementing successful EM curriculum.
